Merger or acquisition

A company has acquired, merged with or been bought by another, which often leads to integration projects and a review of systems, processes and suppliers.

In short: Contact the companies two to six weeks after a deal completes, when integration teams decide which systems and suppliers to keep. Check SGX acquisition categories weekly and set Google Alerts for private deals; existing suppliers to either side should call sooner.

What this signal means

One company has bought another, two have merged, or a business has bought a significant asset such as a site or a division. For listed companies in Singapore, these deals are announced on SGX. For private companies, news usually comes from press releases, LinkedIn posts or the business press.

Why it predicts a purchase

A deal creates work. The combined business has to decide which systems, processes and suppliers to keep, which to merge and which to drop. That can mean new finance and HR systems, IT migration, rebranding, legal and tax work, office moves and changes to service contracts. New owners also tend to bring new priorities.

The signal cuts both ways. If you already supply one side, the deal may put your contract at risk. If you supply neither, it may open a door. Either way, it is a reason to pay attention.

Where to find it in Singapore

  • SGX Company Announcements. Free to search by company, announcement period and category, with filings shown as they are published. Relevant categories include Tender/ Acquisition/ Takeover/ Purchase Offer and Asset Acquisitions and Disposals. Some deals and memoranda of understanding appear under General Announcement. Covers SGX-listed companies, and their deals with private companies.
  • Company announcements and LinkedIn. Free. The main source for deals between private companies.
  • Business news. Singapore business news outlets report larger deals. Some articles are behind paywalls.

We have not listed paid deal databases because we have not verified their coverage of Singapore private companies. If you consider one, test it against deals you already know about.

How to monitor it

  1. Check SGX weekly, filtering by the acquisition-related categories and the past seven days, and scan for companies in your sector.
  2. Search by company name on SGX for listed customers and prospects, so you see deals involving them first.
  3. Set Google Alerts for “acquires” or “acquisition” with “Singapore” and your sector terms. Google emails new matching results at a frequency you choose.
  4. Log the buyer, target, deal type, announcement date, expected completion and source link.
  5. Set a reminder for completion, which is often weeks or months after the first announcement.

How fast to act

Two to six weeks after completion is usually better than the day of the announcement. Before completion, the companies may not be able to discuss integration, and plans are still forming. Soon after completion, integration teams are deciding what to keep, which is when a relevant supplier is most useful. If you are an existing supplier to either side, contact your customer sooner to understand what the deal means for your contract.

Subject: Bringing Keppford and Lansing onto one payroll

Hi Joanne, I saw Keppford Holdings completed its acquisition of Lansing Services last month. Bringing two teams onto one payroll and leave policy is often one of the first integration jobs. We run payroll for Singapore companies of 50 to 300 staff and have handled mid-year migrations. Would a one-page migration checklist be useful for your integration team?

Regards, Benjamin

Pitfalls and rules

  • Announced is not completed. Check the latest announcement before referring to a deal as done.
  • Respect the sensitivity. Staff may be anxious about the deal. Keep messages practical and avoid speculating about job cuts or changes.
  • Do not ask for non-public information. For listed companies, details beyond the announcements may be price sensitive.
  • Asset purchases are not always mergers. Buying a property or a stake is a different signal from buying a whole company. Read the announcement.
  • Check the outreach rules in B2B outreach in Singapore: what PDPA and the Do Not Call rules allow.

FYAdvisers can track deal announcements for the companies you sell to and draft integration-focused outreach for your approval through our signal-based lead generation service.

Frequently asked questions

Which SGX announcement categories cover M&A?

Look at categories such as Tender/ Acquisition/ Takeover/ Purchase Offer and Asset Acquisitions and Disposals, and at General Announcements, where some deals and memoranda of understanding are filed.

Should I contact the buyer or the company being bought?

It depends on what you sell. Integration decisions are usually made by the buyer, so the buyer is often the better contact for systems and services. The acquired company may need help with the transition itself.

Is an announced deal a reliable signal?

Treat it with care until completion. Deals can change or fall through, and companies are often limited in what they can discuss before completion.
