# Intercom vs Zendesk: AI customer service compared (2026)

> Intercom and Zendesk both sell AI agents that answer customers before a human steps in, and both charge per seat plus a fee for each AI resolution. Intercom leads with chat and its Fin AI agent. Zendesk leads with ticketing across email, messaging and voice. Prices below were checked on each vendor's own site in October 2026.

## The verdict

**Choose Intercom** if most of your support happens in chat on your website or app, you want an AI agent to handle a large share of questions, and you like paying for AI only when it produces an outcome. It suits software companies, online services and e-commerce brands with high volumes of repeat questions.

**Choose Zendesk** if you run a traditional help desk with many tickets across email, messaging, social and phone, need structured routing and reporting, or want a wider choice of data hosting regions.

Both now position AI as the first responder. The decision is less about whether you get AI and more about which channel model, pricing model and hosting option fit your operation.

## Pricing in practice

Both vendors charge in two parts: seats for human agents, and usage for AI.

**Intercom** prices Fin per outcome. Its pricing page says an outcome is counted when a customer confirms the issue is resolved, does not ask for more help after Fin responds, or Fin completes a workflow, including handoffs, and that you are charged once per conversation. Advanced includes 20 free Lite seats and Expert includes 50, which helps when colleagues outside support need limited access. Messaging channels such as WhatsApp, SMS and phone are charged on usage.

**Zendesk** includes some automated resolutions per agent each month and charges US$2.00 for each pay-as-you-go resolution beyond that. It also sells committed volumes of resolutions. Zendesk counts a resolution when the AI agent resolves the request without escalation to a human.

To compare fairly, estimate monthly conversations, the share you expect AI to handle, and the number of human agents. For example, 2,000 AI-handled conversations a month would cost around US$1,980 at Intercom's listed starting rate and US$4,000 at Zendesk's pay-as-you-go rate, before seats and before any included or committed volume. Your mix will differ, and the definitions are not identical, so ask both vendors for a quote on your numbers.

## Features

### AI agent

Intercom's Fin works across email, live chat, phone and other channels, can take actions in external systems, and hands off to a human inbox. Intercom also sells Fin on its own for businesses that keep their existing help desk, with no seat costs and a minimum monthly commitment.

Zendesk AI agents are included in every Suite and Support plan and billed per automated resolution. Zendesk also offers Forethought AI agents, which it says work within Zendesk and on other platforms.

### Help desk and channels

Zendesk Suite plans combine ticketing, messaging, live chat, help centre and voice. Suite Professional adds skills-based routing and an IVR phone menu. If phone support matters, Zendesk's built-in telephony is a strong reason to choose it.

Intercom is built around its Messenger, shared inbox and ticketing, with a help centre plus in-app chats, banners and tooltips on every plan. Advanced adds multiple team inboxes, a workflow builder and round-robin assignment.

### Setup effort

The quality of either AI agent depends on your help content. Before a trial, tidy your top 50 questions into clear help articles and decide which actions the AI may take, such as checking an order status. That work matters more than the platform.

## Singapore specifics

### Data residency and PDPA

Neither vendor lists Singapore hosting. Zendesk offers more regions, including Japan and Australia, and includes data locality on Suite Professional and higher. Intercom offers Australia hosting, but only for new workspaces on Advanced and Expert under contract. Intercom's own documentation also notes some data, such as billing details and email routing, still passes through the US. If you handle sensitive personal data, review each vendor's data processing terms against your PDPA obligations.

### Languages and channels

Many Singapore businesses support customers in English, Chinese and Malay and over WhatsApp. Test the AI agent's answers in each language you support, and check WhatsApp pricing on both platforms, since it is charged per conversation or message.

### Grants

The Productivity Solutions Grant closed to new applications after September 2026 and EDGE replaced it. We do not say either product is eligible. Try the [EDGE grant calculator](/tools/edge-grant-calculator/) and confirm with the agency.

## Questions to ask before you commit

- **How exactly is an AI resolution or outcome counted?** Ask for the definition in writing, including what happens when a customer comes back later with the same issue.
- **What is included each month?** Zendesk includes some automated resolutions per agent; Intercom's Copilot includes a small free allowance per agent. Confirm what your plan includes.
- **Which channels cost extra?** WhatsApp, SMS, phone and outbound messages are often usage-based.
- **Can we cap AI spend?** Ask about alerts and limits so a busy month does not produce a surprise bill.
- **What does the AI do when unsure?** Check the handoff to humans, and make sure customers can reach a person.

## Which should you choose?

- **SaaS or app company with in-product chat:** Intercom, for its Messenger and in-app tools.
- **E-commerce brand with repeat order questions:** Either; model AI costs on your volumes and test order-status actions.
- **Multichannel help desk with a phone line:** Zendesk Suite Professional.
- **Business that must host outside the US:** Zendesk offers more regions; Intercom Australia hosting needs Advanced or Expert under contract.
- **Business happy with its current help desk but wanting better AI:** Ask Intercom about Fin on its own, or Zendesk about Forethought.
- **Team wanting a custom bot tied to internal systems:** Consider a custom build. See [AI chatbot costs in Singapore](/blog/ai-chatbot-cost-singapore/).
